This year, UBC eBusiness Club has shown tremendous growth and established itself as a valuable part of the Sauder community.
We’ve introduced students to the best practices for digital marketing. We’ve partnered up with some of the top companies & professionals who support our vision. We have achieved more than anyone could imagine.
Now we’re looking for the brightest and most awesome individuals to join our team in the upcoming year and help us pursue our mission, break the rules, and reach the top.

You’ve just returned from a conference. You can remember the names of some cool people you talked to at your table during lunch. What do you do? You could add them on Facebook, and hope that they accept your friend request – all so that you can see the photos they post of tonight’s dinner and write Happy Birthday on their Wall in the future.
Alternatively, you could search for them on LinkedIn, and once you’ve connected to them you’ll also gain access to their entire professional network. Cool, huh? LinkedIn provides you with more than just a free online profile. On LinkedIn, your contact network is built up of direct connections, second-degree connections and third-degree connections. Anybody that someone you know knows, you can know too.
At last count, LinkedIn had over 5 million members in Canada alone. More than 14 million students and recent college graduates from around the world utilize LinkedIn to get ahead in their careers – if you attend our workshop, we will share some secrets for success with you!
We encourage attendees to create a LinkedIn account if they don’t have one already, and to add a whole bunch of their friends before the event (invite them to come too!)
Throughout the evening, we will be discussing a few topics as follows:
- What you should and shouldn’t do on LinkedIn
- Using LinkedIn to land your dream job
- Tips to maximize your LinkedIn profile
- And more!
We have prepared some great guest speakers for you.

Welcome back to school!
Okay, we know that not everyone will consider tomorrow to be a happy day. Nearly every student must have complained about school at one time or another, but that’s only a natural outcome of the stress that we go through as a result of balancing our academic, professional and personal lives.
Venting is a common function of many casually-run diary-style blogs. However, blogging can be used for much more meaningful purposes too. Effective bloggers can deliver commentary or news on specific topics in a way that engages readers as well as inviting feedback. Other bloggers will continue to write in a very personal manner, but by taking on an upbeat tone in their accounts, the story of their day can suddenly become quite entertaining.
Here are seven blogs run by UBC students that we think you should check out:
Hacking Education and Technology

In his About Me, Andre will tell you that he studies Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. The best way to sum up his blog would be to observe the way he’s categorized his own posts – Andre blogs about education, technology, [socioeconomic] development, coding, and [his own] life. – http://andremalan.net/
Life on University Blvd.

Eric tells us that he is a Third Year Psychology student in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. Eric has created quite a mix of content on his blog, ranging from summer movie reviews to life experiences to response on the latest TED talk video. – http://etodac.wordpress.com/
夢と愛の千夜一夜
Tyler is a Science Student at the University of British Columbia. It looks like he originally started his blog to offer advice to prospective UBC students, but now he also blogs about restaurants he’s been to, employment opportunities, and – if we may say so – two very cute cats, among other things. - http://www.tylersuzukinelson.com/blog/
Lady Libriform
Alison is a Library Science Graduate Student at SLAIS at the University of British Columbia. Looking at some of the larger and bolder tags in her sidebar, she can be expected to blog about social media, courses she’s taking, and Neil Gaiman (ooh, that’s good taste, there). That only begins to describe the full range of topics that she’s blogged on to-date. – http://blogs.ubc.ca/alisonjdodd/
Crumb Trails

Jordan is a student of Culture Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus, but he’s currently studying urban geography and media in Singapore. Jordan posts frequently, utilizing multiple forms of media. His Music Monday posts are usually accompanied by a streaming or download link, he photoblogs, and of course he also writes. – http://jackerbies.blogspot.com/
Corners of Whoo’s Life

Tina studies Human Geography at the University of British Columbia. She’s self-declared that her blog contains but “random musings” from wherever – or whenever – she may be, but never has randomness equalled triviality. Tina’s posts are interesting and engaging. Not to mention, she makes it a point to address us – her readers – directly. - http://tinawhoo.wordpress.com/
Josh’s Guide to Leadership
Josh is a third year Political Science student at the University of British Columbia. He began blogging just-for-fun, but now he mostly blogs about a topic familiar to him – and relevant to almost all students. Student leadership! Josh uses examples that are easy to relate to for most of us. He offers perspective that is valuable if you’re thinking of joining a club, but his advice could also be applied to job seeking. - http://www.blog.joshuasunga.com/
We highly recommend that you take a look at these blogs. They’re worthwhile reads, even if you only have the time to read the one or two most recent posts. Give all seven of them a try. Why? Because seven is a lucky number.
Good luck to everyone for the first term of 2011.

School’s about to start again, but we made coming back to school more exciting with the Big 4 Reception. UBC eBusiness partnered up with three other Sauder clubs and organized the get-to-know-each-other meeting whilst having fun with pizza and music on a Sunday afternoon.
The event started off with spectacular presentations by each club. We finally had a chance to unveil our new mission “Be a part of the change,” and it was greeted with enthusiasm and occasional laughter (which is a good thing, of course). This was followed by some mingling and delicious pizza. Students of every background – including first years, transfer students, and even Science students – showed up to learn about the enticing clubs.
This is just the beginning of eBusiness Club’s activities. We have some amazing campaigns and events up our sleeves, so keep an eye out for our team in green t-shirts and don’t forget to become a member.
September is around the corner, and all the university fun is about to begin. For the last few months we’ve been working hard to create the best possible experience for our new and returning members. The events are lined up, blog posts drafted, and overall we’ve never been more ready to build that bridge between UBC students and the world of e-business.
Over the next month we will be unveiling a lot of cool things, and we will also be present at multiple events on campus. So here’s a little roundup of places and events where you can meet the new UBC eBusiness Club exec team, get your memberships and learn what we have in stock for you.
Big 4 Reception
This year, eBusiness Club has partnered up with BizTech, TLog and Real Estate clubs to show all new Sauderites an impressively good time.
Find the event on Facebook, register and tweet about it using hashtag #Big4Reception!
Booth Time

Our booth is something special. It is indeed like no other. We will be “boothing” every day during Business Week between September 12 and 16. We’ll also come by the FROSH Clubs Fair on September 4th. Finally, you can find our booth on campus during Clubs Days.
We’ll be very excited to see you at any time, tell you more about what this club can do for you and how you can get involved.
eBusiness Ice-Breaker Event
On September 23, we invite everyone to kick off the new year with eBusiness Club! Smash the ice, learn about online business, enjoy fun activities, and meet new people. For every member this is a great opportunity to learn what they have singed up for, and if you still doubt whether to become a member or not, this is the time make a decision.
Also check out the full list of our events this year. There are 7 of them and they…well, they are pretty much awesome.
Following to Meet
To keep in touch and stay updated about where, when and how to meet us, you can always follow @ebizubc on Twitter or like our page on Facebook. Moreover, we’d be happy to arrange a one-on-one 5-minute meeting with you at almost any time — just send us a note through the contact form on this website.
Oh, wow, it’s been a whole year! A whole year since we have started this amazing journey of becoming friends with as many Sauder students as possible =). We’ve done everything we could possibly do this year. In the end, we managed to pull off an amazing event, Update micro-conference. Yet, there is no reason to think that our work here is over, as we still have a massive pile of ideas and plans to bring to life starting next September!
We’re on air!
It all started with an idea that our president, Teresa Wang, came up with in 2009. She realized the importance of social media, high-tech startups and how they influence the business world and everyday lives of everyone. She also saw a great gap between what universities teach and what is happening in the real world. So, after finding another 7 individuals ready to take on this risky enterprise, hours of filling out applications with AMS and CUS, UBC e-Business Club was born.
Unfortunately, it is no easy job to build a new club from scratch, but our exec. team did their best and ended the year on a high note. We’re also unbelievably grateful to the first 25 students who dived into the unknown by becoming our members. Furthermore, we are thankful to everyone who has supported us: from teachers to friends, from other clubs’ execs to career services representatives. Thank you so much!
Updated!
Our coolest event by far, Update micro-conference was held on March 16th, and we can say that, without a doubt, it was a blast! Thanks to everyone for coming and special thanks to our speakers, Brian Wong, Theodora Lamb and Ann Stone.
To help you relive the experience or just see what the whole thing was about, we’ve uploaded quite a few things on the web. Here’s a list:
- Many pictures on Flickr
- Brian Wong’s speech on YouTube. In. Three. Parts.
- Theo’s speech also in video format
- Mike Abasov’s speech + his keynote on SlideShare
Again, thanks for coming (hope you enjoyed the food too), and we’ll see you at many other awesome events next year!
Heading for The Future
The year is over, and many of us are graduating. We will miss Teresa, Hong, Lisa, Shirley and Lana as they are moving into the real life, ready to make some noise. On the other hand, we promise to make them proud with how the club will be doing.
Mike Abasov
As of today, Mike Abasov, almost 3rd year marketing student at Sauder, has officially become the club’s new president and taken on the whole variety of painful responsibilities. So we can only wish him good luck and watch what he is going to do with the organization.
“Sure, e-Business is a very wide term, yet it has transformed my life in so many ways and has given me opportunities I’d though were impossible to achieve at my age. I truly believe that this incredible environment that doesn’t discriminate by age or anything else is one of the best things that has ever happend to humanity (alongside with gummy bears), and I am hoping to share this vision with my classmates,” — Mike
But nobody can do this alone, so for those of you who don’t know it yet, the following section of this post may be quite interesting.
We Are Recruiting
Yes, we are. We have already found a few executives for the next year (stay tuned for the introductions later in April), but we are still looking for a few more. All information about positions is available on this website, and you can, of course, apply online. If you’re passionate about what we do and want to be a part of our movement, join us, and we promise you a ride like no other!
Meanwhile, our activities will be less visible for the summer as we will be planning some rock-star events. However, we will keep posting tips, articles and update on this blog, Twitter at @ebizubc, and Facebook. See you in September!
A few days ago we had an interesting discussion with one Sauder prof, who told us that our club is going to fail and that the whole social media thing is a fad. We think he’s wrong.
Why?
Because the game (be it a business or a career development game) is changing every second, and social media has never been more important. Moreover, in the next few years it’s gonna become a critical part of any business. The same way radio, television, and texting found their ways into our everyday lives, the Online is becoming a huge part of them too.
This is why we believe that this is a perfect time for our club to be started and that we have a lot to share with Sauder students. Because when we all graduate, it will be our responsibility to find jobs, promote companies, start new ones and kick Microsoft’s (Apple’s?) butt. It’s up to us to be the Facebook and iPhone generation and make money and fame out of it.
Watch This
Here’s an interview with Gary Vaynerchuk, a bestselling author and superstar entrepreneur who talks about all these changes that are happening to the way people communicate and businesses succeed. Watch it and you should have enough reasons to become more engaged online.
The “How” Question
Wether you have already decided that digital is what you wanna do, or you’re just curious about what online has to offer, our club’s goal is to help you. So when September comes, do not hesitate to join! We’ll make sure you don’t regret it.
Meanwhile, we have one more exciting event you should attend: Update micro-conference. The tickets are selling fast, so make sure you get yours before we’re over capacity!
— Mike Abasov, Project Manager
Good news everyone! Our first annual super-duper event is finally here!
Update is an annual micro-conference hosted by e-Business Club
The goal of the conference is to update students at Sauder on the current state of the web, social media, online marketing and personal branding. And we’ve got some cool speakers lined up and eager to share some insights on the current happenings in the e-Business sphere.
This event is our first attempt to show you what our club is all about and prepare you for what’s coming next. So you must be there!
New features (a.k.a. agenda)
The format we’ve selected — micro-conference — is perfect for your busy schedule. The whole event is only 2 hours long, but almost overloaded with content.
This year, speakers are:
- Brian Wong, super-star entrepreneur, ex-Sauderite, who’s behind followformation and kiip.me.
- Theodora Lamb, online community manager and works with MEC’s The Big Wild, the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Asia Pacific Foundation
- Mike Abasov, marketing ambassador at HootSuite, independent brand consultant, as well as current Sauder student.
Besides our guests, some snacks and drink also promised to show up.
Where & When & How Much
Update micro-conference will be happening on:
- Date: Wednesday, March 16
- Time: from 5 to 7pm
- Location: DLAM 142
- >> RSVP on Facebook (you still need to get a ticket!)
The price of the tickets is $5 for non-members ($8 at the door) and free for all members. You can register at our booth at Henry Angus building.
Double Deal!
To double the magic, we’ve partnered with UBC Biztech club, and now you can get tickets to both Update and FIT Conference for only $8. Plus, the events are totally free for the members of both clubs.
Live updates
For the next 2 weeks we’ll be tweeting, ReTweeting, status-updating and going insane using hashtag #eBizUpdate. If you have anything to say on the matter, use it too! And also you can always follow us at @ebizubc and like our Facebook Page.
As we all know, with the dramatic development of internet, e-Business is becoming more and more prevailing nowadays that its existence can no longer be ignored. Unfortunately, at UBC, one of the best universities in the world, we can hardly find a course or a club focusing on this matter.
That is why we came up with the idea to establish an e-Business club. We believe that there are many UBC students who are eager to gain knowledge of this newest type of entrepreneurship but are confused because there are so little resources available to us.
As a team of UBC students who share the great passion for e-Business, we hope to gather these students and provide them with a semi-professional platform to study and discuss topics regarding e-Business as well as provide an opportunity for networking and growing in the industry.
